Weird Café

  • Weird Church 2688 Penrith Avenue Cumberland, BC, V0R 1S0 Canada (map)

A monthly concert series to benefit us all!

Local artists of all stripes coming together to quench our music-thirsty ears while raising money for fantastic local charities and highlighting local visual artists.

This month we are featuring some AMAZING jazz talent:

Steve Wallace is a noted Canadian jazz bassist born in 1956 in Toronto. Most of his career took place there and internationally, including playing local clubs, touring and recording with  American jazz greats such as Zoot Sims, Ray Bryant, Scott Hamilton, Woody Herman among many others, as well as Canadian giants such as Oscar Peterson, Rob McConnell, Phil Nimmons, Oliver Jones, Ed Bickert, Mike Murley and a host of others. Steve moved to Courtenay in July, 2022 where he now happily lives with his long-suffering wife, Anna.

Blaine Dunaway has a lifetime of experience in music of all kinds, and a degree in jazz. Violin and trumpet/flugelhorn are the main instruments, and learning basic piano, guitar and bass. Some radio, movie and television experience, and many recordings. Also some vocal work.

Mike Eddy’s passion has been jazz and retiring in Comox has given him opportunities to play with some of the finest musicians on the island and teach jazz piano at CYMC as well as play and hear great jazz at the Georgia Straight Jazz Society.

Brent Hart has been playing in the valley on keyboards and reeds since the early 90's in many different combos. I really enjoy big band music and playing in pit orchestras for musical theatre but my favourite is small group jazz. It's going to be a real thrill to play with this group of stellar musicians.

Gregor Schoenberg started playing guitar in his tender teenage years. He has been in the orchestra pit for shows such as Evita and Rent, and has played for the Summit Big Band in Calgary, and for the Georgia Strait Big Band. Since moving to the valley in 2019, he has been active on multiple musical fronts, and is looking forward to playing with this fine group of musicians at the Weird Café.

This month we will be raising $ for installing an accessible bathroom at Weird Church and improving the accessibility ramp outside. All donations over $20 will receive a tax receipt at the end of the year.
